When launched back in 2013 the BMW i3 and its bigger brother the i8 were well ahead of their time. Whilst Audi had the fire breathing V10 R8, BMW developed a 3-Cylinder Petrol/Hybrid alternative. The styling of the i8 was pure concept car and if you see one on the streets today it still looks more modern than most other cars.

The idea of i3 is very similar to the i8. It was a ground up, clean sheet of paper design of what an electric car could be. It is not like other car manufactures based upon an existing model. BMW could of saved millions of pounds and simply replaced the petrol/diesel engine in the 1 Series with an electric motor and some batteries. This approach would of been a compromise that BMW was not prepared to accept.

The i3 is constructed of mostly Carbon Fibre. This offers low weight & high strength which is what you want when the car needs to go as far as it can on one charge and carry some weighty batteries. The use of Carbon Fibre meant that the normal rules of car design could be adapted. Yes the i3 is a 5Dr hatchback however due to the fact there is no need for a traditional 'B' pillar the rear doors hinge backward in a suicide fashion. This greatly improves access in to the car and makes it overall more airy inside.

The exterior design of the i3 is again similar to the i8 in that it looks like a concept car. It has a very short bonnet and bumper overhangs. It also has large wheel arches which surround on this car 20" alloy wheels. This gives the car an almost cartoon appearance.

You would think looking at this car that the ride would be very firm. Not so, the ride on an i3 is very good and offers a mix of dynamism and comfort. The wheels are also a lot slimmer than you get on a normal car of this size. This is to help reduce the rolling resistance which again helps the possible range.

BMW have always used 'The Ultimate Driving Machine' to describe their cars and this statement is true of the i3. It feels light to drive and thanks to the instant torque of the electric motor offers impressive and seamless acceleration.

The i3 like most cars has evolved during its life cycle. This has meant the battery capacity, power and range has improved. This car use the latest 135 kW motor and 42 kWh battery pack. This gives the car an impressive range of up to 153 miles. Electric cars also attract very low road tax costs. 12 months Isle of Man Road Tax for this car would be just £65.

This particular i3 is an S model which means you get an uplift in power & performance, larger wheels & tyres which are covered by extended wheel arches and fully colour coded body work with a more sporty aero kit.
