Small car. Huge character. The Abarth 595 Competizione is proof that outright size has very little to do with how much fun a car can deliver. Compact, aggressive, unapologetically Italian and bursting with personality, this is a genuine pocket rocket – and in vivid Adrenaline Green, it certainly isn’t interested in going unnoticed.

At its heart is Abarth’s wonderfully feisty 1.4-litre T-Jet turbocharged petrol engine, producing a healthy 180 HP. In something this small and light, that translates into seriously entertaining performance, with instant turbocharged punch and the kind of point-and-squirt agility that makes even an ordinary journey feel like an event. The 595 Competizione has always been less about chasing numbers and more about sensation – noise, response, attitude and involvement.

And there is plenty of noise. The unmistakable quad-exit exhaust system gives the little Abarth a soundtrack completely out of proportion with its dimensions, delivering the pops, growls and hard-edged turbocharged note that have become such an important part of the Competizione experience. It looks mischievous standing still and sounds even better once you start exploiting that 180 HP.

The styling carries exactly the same sense of theatre. Finished in spectacular Adrenaline Green, this 595 looks every inch the miniature Italian performance car. Chunky bumpers, purposeful detailing, 17-inch alloy wheels and those four exhaust outlets give it a squat, muscular stance. It manages to be both unmistakably related to the iconic Fiat 500 and completely transformed by the Abarth treatment.

Inside, the sporting intent continues with the superb Sabelt Sports Front Seats. More than simply a visual upgrade, these figure-hugging seats provide excellent support and give the cabin the purposeful feel of a much more serious performance car. Combined with the compact dimensions, sporting driving position and responsive controls, they reinforce the sense that the Competizione has been designed around the person sitting behind the wheel.

Yet this is still a car you can use every day, with modern conveniences including Apple CarPlay, allowing straightforward access to navigation, music and compatible smartphone functions, while LED headlights add both contemporary appearance and excellent illumination.

With just 17,800 miles, this example combines low mileage with one of the most desirable specifications in the 595 range. The Competizione is arguably where the Abarth formula comes together at its best: enough performance to be genuinely quick, enough aggression to feel special, but still wrapped in a package compact enough to exploit virtually anywhere.

There is something wonderfully old-school about the Abarth philosophy. It takes a small Italian hatchback, adds more power, more noise, bigger wheels, sharper responses and considerably more attitude, then leaves the driver to enjoy the result. It isn't trying to be subtle, sensible or anonymous – and that is precisely the point.

On the Isle of Man, that character makes even more sense. Its compact footprint is perfect around town, but head towards the coast or onto one of our quieter, twisting roads and the 595 Competizione comes alive. You don't need enormous speeds to enjoy it; the entertainment comes from working the engine, enjoying the chassis and hearing that exhaust ricochet from the scenery behind you.
