Porsche debuted the all-New Cayenne over 20 years ago back in 2002. This was a controversial move and car. It was so far removed from any Porsche that had come before it that most Porsche enthusiasts didn't get it, didn't like it and didn't want to drive it. Porsche was renowned for building rear engined sports cars not two ton SUV's. Porsche enthusiasts thought that the Cayenne was cynical marketing excise to grab a piece of the fast growing SUV sector. The other negative element that effected the Cayenne was that it shared many of its components with the VW Touareg and Audi Q7. Porsche were not know for 'platform sharing' and the thought that a Porsche was really a VW/Audi did not sit well with some buyers.
All of the above is true however is was also all before anyone had driven the new Porsche Cayenne. Once you saw the car and got behind the steering wheel there was no doubt that this car was a true Porsche. All of the design cue's associated with other Porsche models were there. The 5 hooded dials located in the dash brinicle like every other Porsche are located on the dash. The wide sculptured wheel arches housing large alloy wheels and the front bumper with gapping air cooling ducts are all part of the design.
The Cayenne may weight two tons however it never felt this heavy and always masked its weight and mass very well. The engine range has always been strong and goes from a 3.0L V6 to a 4.8L V8 twin Turbo petrol. Porsche did also offer the Cayenne with a choice of two diesel engines. 3.0L V6 Turbo and like this car 4.1L V8 Twin Turbo.
The comments about the Porsche Cayenne being a cynical marketing excise were true in the sense that it attracted lots of new buyers to the brand. If you owned a Porsche 911 but also wanted a family car or SUV usually meant looking at something from an other brand. Now you could have a car from Porsche.
The Cayenne went on to be a huge success for Porsche and was consistently their top selling model. The sales of Cayenne's meant that Porsche could use the money created by this model to further develop the 911's, Boxster's and Cayman's. Without the Cayenne Porsche might not of survived as a brand. Its thanks to the Cayenne that Porsche is such a good place now.
This Porsche Cayenne is a second generation 'S' model. This sits it in the middle of the range in terms of specification and performance. This car is powered by a 4.1L V8 Twin Turbo Diesel engine and what an engine it is. It develops 385 BHP but more importantly 850 Nm torque. As a publicity stunt on 1 May 2017, a 2017 Porsche Cayenne S Diesel set the Guinness World Record for heaviest aircraft pulled by a production car. The Cayenne towed a 265-tonAirbus A380 to a distance of 42 meters, breaking the previous 2013 record set by a Nissan Patrol.
As with any Porsche the base specification is exactly that...'basic'! When you are ordering and 'spec'ing' a New Porsche it is usually a blank canvas affair. There is a vast range of factory features and options to choose from. On this car it would appear that most of the available boxes were ticked. The specification of this car includes PASM - Porsche Active Suspension Management, BOSE Stereo, a Panoramic Glass Sunroof, Adaptive, Heated, Memory Front Seats, 21" 911 Turbo II Style Alloy Wheels and Deployable Tow-Bar just in case you wanted to tow any aircraft! It also worth noting that although this car can tow a plane its running costs are not sky high. 12 months Isle of Man road tax is £372 which is very fair considering its performance capabilities.
The other decision a person must make when ordering their new Porsche is the colour combination. The Cayenne has always been offered in a very subdued palette of different shades of grey, dark blue or black. This car stands out thanks to its gleaming Carrera White paintworks and contrasting full black leather upholstery.
To conclude if you are in the market for a great looking SUV with a very high specification and monster powertrain that can literally tow an aircraft look no further.
