The acquisition of Bentley by VW in 1988 heralded a new era for the brand and the start of whole new range of cars. The large luxury 4-door saloon style was still offered with the Mulsanne but it was the New Continental GT 2Dr Coupe that spiked the most interest.

The Continental GT 2Dr Coupe harked back to original Bentleys from W O Bentley. Sleek body design matched to a powerful engine capable of carrying the occupants on great driving adventures.

Its easy to forget that the Bentley brand was now owned by a company more used to making 5Dr hatchbacks like the Golf. Under VW ownership the Bentley brand now had the investment and support to improve the quality of the cars and introduce new technologies that so far had not been offered by the brand.

This first Continental GT Coupe was launched back in 2003 and stayed in production until 2011 when it was replaced by this car obviously known as the generation two. The idea of traveling great distance at great speed is what the Continental GT Coupe was all about.

The takeover by VW also brought another very exciting element to the Bentley brand and that was the new W12 engine. Bentley's had historically be powered by a 6.75 litre V8 petrol engine. It was a great engine but its origins dated back a long way. The all-New W12 was a 6.0L petrol engine in a W12 configuration that also featured two turbos. This monster of an engine developed 560 HP and 650 Nm torque. The Continental GT Coupe also brought another first to the Bentley brand and that was 4-Wheel Drive. Now you could use all of the power all of the time.

Bentley has always been an exclusive car manufacture. In relation to other car manufactures and the rest of the VW group their sales volumes were tiny.
